Josiah Road is a spiritual development initiative that focuses on motivating and encouraging students to stand up and lead out as Christ-followers in the student community. The initiative was inspired by principles gleaned from the biblical account of King Josiah (2 Kings 23; 2 Chronicles 34). Josiah’s journey of faith brought him face-to-face with a culture that had turned its back on the One True God. Instead of simply going with the flow, as many in his position before him did, Josiah sought to restore his nation’s spiritual and moral foundation with a zeal only God could provide.
The Josiah Road initiative is built on a digital platform in order to be most accessible to students. The Internet is an invaluable tool for sharing the Gospel and introducing people to the King of kings. The Web site JosiahRoad.com was launched in 2007 by the ERLC to reach students and introduce them to the writings and activities of other young believers. We are confident this initiative will encourage students to seek after God as they see how He is working in and through other young people. Josiah Road features blogs, pictures, videos, and downloadable resources written and produced by students and student leaders. These resources are designed to deepen students’ grasp of biblical truths and help them discover ways they can partner with God in impacting the world.
“This younger generation offers more promise and hope for spiritual and cultural reform than I have seen in all my years in the ministry. To reach this demographic we couldn’t keep communicating the way we have been for the last fifteen years. We must take advantage of the enhanced technology that is now available nationwide. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Flickr, and wireless services have become staples in the lives of these young people—right next to food, sleep, and friends. The JosiahRoad.com initiative is configured to reach this spiritually hungry audience.” ~Richard Land (ERLC)
Life is a journey. We are each traveling down a road, writing our autobiography every minute of every day. Our paths take us through mountains and valleys; times of extreme joy and periods of intense sorrow. We pursue dreams as we laugh, love and cry. As we travel down the road, do we know where we are going? What is our final destination? One day we will reach the end of our road, but what awaits us after that?
Adam and Eve started humanity’s journey by walking with God. However, they soon began to wander from the path to pursue their selfish desires. God called to them from the road, but they continued to wander further and further away until the path was no longer visible…
We are born into the wilderness of life, far from the path of God. We are born into a world that is still pursuing the same sinful desires of the first humans, and we, because of our nature, immediately follow the example set before us. The blind lead the blind, and we are trapped in darkness. The problem is, only God’s path leads to heaven. People fool themselves into thinking all paths lead to God, but there can only be one true path. There are not multiple truths, either one of them is true or none of them, but not all. What about all the other paths? Where do they go?
Death is what awaits each of us at the end of our road. If only one path leads to God, then all others lead away from Him. Our road may bring us close to the gates of heaven, but close doesn’t cut it.
“But why would a loving God allow this to happen?”
God created human beings not robots. A robot cannot return the love of its creator; a human being can. However, a human being also has the choice not to return this love. When we make this choice, we wander from God’s path into the wilderness of “sin.” The wilderness stains us in such a way that it is impossible to enter heaven as we are because it would ruin heaven.
“So what can we do?”
On our own, there is nothing we can do. Our situation is hopeless. Thankfully, God has not abandoned us. He made a way for us to be saved!
Jesus Christ, the Son of God came to earth as our Savior, to lead us back on the right path. His death on the cross paid the price required for us to be clean before God. No matter how dirty we may be, no matter how long we have been going the wrong direction, no matter how lost we are…the blood of Jesus can wash us clean. In the darkness of sin, we can see a light. Jesus stands on the path, lighting our way back. We need to follow this light, believing that Jesus is the true Son of God and that his death on the cross and resurrection from the dead paid the price we owe. But, it requires something more…
To follow something means you have to leave something else behind. If we want to follow Jesus, we must turn our back on the old way of life; of following our sinful desires. Our journey has taught us one thing: We do not know where we are going. Each of our paths wind through the wilderness, crossing each other along the way, but they all have the same destination: Death. So…
Are you tired? Has the journey beaten you down? Do you feel the weight of being lost? Can you see the stains that cover you, reminding you the cost of leaving God’s path? You may still be young or you may be older and have traveled down the wrong road for many years. It is never too early to turn around and it is never too late. Can you see the light? Can you hear the voice of Jesus, calling you back? He does not do this because he has to but because…
You can know this love today. You don’t have to be lost anymore. Let Jesus lead the way as the Lord of your life, and watch the darkness disappear. Jesus is the Light, and darkness cannot be present when light is around. When the light is present, we can see life for what it really is. We can enjoy the journey the way it was meant to be lived. Once you step back on God’s path, the memory of all others will start to fade, because there is no comparison. The choice is up to you.
“Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner in need of saving. I believe you love me and sent your son Jesus to die for my sins. I ask that you would forgive my sins and come into my life as my Lord and my savior. I choose this day to turn from my sin and follow you the rest of my life. Thank you God, Amen.”
