Seeking God: Part 4

posted by Kaylan Christopher

In 2006, God broke me—but I asked for it. I lost my job. I was poor—in spirit and my pockets. My grandfather died. I began to slip again spiritually. And God told me to leave my family and friends in Dallas—my comfort zone—and go to serve him at a suburban church just southwest of Houston. All within the first six months!

Just Below the Surface

posted by Lisa Huddleston

Crash! In one blinding instant, lightening struck a tree about 50 feet from our house. Peeling bark as it went, the bolt leapt from the tree to the fence post, splitting it into pieces, and then ran along the barbed wire at the bottom sending metal flying like shrapnel. At the gate post, the current dove into the ground finding the wire to our old, long-forgotten, electric dog fence. It followed that wire straight into the house, exploding the control box and frying the outlet, the security system, my laptop and printer, our garage door opener, and the light bulbs in the eaves. Naturally, at that moment, we didn’t know what had hit us.

Out Of Control!

posted by Mike Blackaby

I hate flying. I have had opportunities to fly overseas several times, and the air travel has always been miserable. At first I thought this resulted from the severe lack of anything to do while in the plane, but I have recently discovered this is not the only reason. The real explanation is that I’m scared. It’s funny, because I participate in much more dangerous activities everyday (such as riding shotgun while my brother drives), but every time a plane hits turbulence I start to panic. I struggle grasping the fact that an unknown pilot is deciding my destiny while thousands of feet in the air!

Friendly Neighborhood Insomniac Pt. 2

posted by Daniel Blackaby

Isn’t it funny how the seemingly littlest things can change your life? I asked my girlfriend the other day how she decided to pursue fashion design. She responded, “Well, I watched the movie 13 Going On 30 and I decided what I wanted to do with my life….” After one quick laugh from me and a quicker verbal slap-to-the-face from her, I realized how much little things can impact our lives. For me, it was a bright pink, flowery piece of paper…

Friendly Neighborhood Insomniac - Part 1

posted by Daniel Blackaby

I couldn’t fall asleep at night. I was assured this was a normal struggle for boys my age and that it would quickly pass. However, my insomnia didn’t pass… it got worse. And worse.

A Minivan, a Spider, and a Brush with Death

posted by Mike Blackaby

It started out as a peaceful summer drive in my minivan. Yes, I owned a minivan, complete with the speakers and blue interior lights that I added to give it a more “me” feel. I was driving through a set of stoplights when I caught something out of the corner of my eye descending from the roof onto my right shoulder. Now you must understand, there is one thing in life I am deathly afraid of. I’d say I’m afraid of failure, pain, rejection, and all the normal stuff, but nothing competes with my fear of spiders.

Gravity

posted by Andrew Hebert

Have you ever had a circumstance that has just totally brought you down to the harsh reality of life? It feels like gravity is just crushing in on you and your world is falling apart – maybe when you lose your job or receive a phone call and find out a friend has committed suicide. Somehow life will never be the same and you are stuck dealing with the tragic realities of life on earth… .

As a friend, what can I say to this family that has experienced such a loss this week? How can there be any hope for them? I’ve thought about this question for the last few days and have really had a difficult time coming up with anything that would be meaningful to this family right now. The only answer I’ve been able to come to is that there is no hope outside of Jesus.

And the Winner is…

posted by Daniel Blackaby

I had many hobbies and amusements growing up. I enjoyed hockey, guitar, PS2 etc. However, of all my pastimes—I won’t lie—my favorite was tormenting my little sister Carrie. Being three years younger, she was the perfect target for my cruel shenanigans.

From Tragedy to Glory: Union University

Union University

Figure 1 An aerial view shows the path of the F-4 tornado that hit Union University’s campus on Feb. 5, as well as the breadth of the destruction.

I’m a Union University evangelist. I have been for a few years now. I love my alma mater. I loved it while I was there and missed it terribly when I left. I have even voluntarily attended recruitment events after graduation. But I have never been more proud of the “ole UU” than in the last week.
