Me + Math = Impossible

posted by Jody Johnston

Math has not been my best subject in school. In fact, it is my worst subject. When I got my report card in the middle of this past semester, I realized I might not pass the class. To bring up my grade to a “C” I was going to have to get at least a “B” on the rest of my tests. The problem was I hadn’t even made a “C” on any of my tests! In higher math everything you learn builds on what you learn next, so passing was looking impossible. I knew that there was no way I could pass on my own. I came to the realization that I needed help.

“Sherlock Blackaby”

posted by Mike Blackaby

The night before my birthday, I could only think about what might await me the next morning. Thanks to an overactive sense of curiosity, it didn’t take long before I sneaked downstairs in the dark to uncover the mystery. Sure enough, there was a package waiting for me at the kitchen table. I carefully removed the tissue paper, peered inside the bag and saw …a pair of kneepads.

Burning Ring of Fire

posted by Mike Blackaby

When you are a male, there is an instinct that attracts you to fire. With danger involved and possible destruction, man is drawn to fire like a teenage girl to a shoe sale. However, every once and a while, man underestimates the power of fire.

A couple years ago, I was hanging out with several friends at my parents’ house. When it started to get dark, someone eagerly suggested we use the fire pit in the back yard, and I jumped at the opportunity.

Finishing Well

posted by Lisa Huddleston

One of the many good things about walking or running outdoors is that you can’t quit before you make it all the way home. But, alas … I walk on a treadmill. That pretty much says it all for me. Yes, I have trouble finishing what I start.

Get Real

posted by Lisa Huddleston

The other evening I watched the 2001 film, “A Beautiful Mind,” which tells the story of John Nash, a 1994 Nobel Prize winner and brilliant mathematician who struggled to overcome the delusions and reality-warping effects of schizophrenia. I have seen this film before, but I continue to be profoundly impressed by the man’s ability to use more than his sensual perceptions to ascertain reality. By trusting family and friends who loved him to tell him if something was “real” and by choosing not to feed his delusions, Nash managed to keep his feet in the real world and to contribute to it greatly. That’s pretty deep stuff, but what I really mean to ponder here is how much of what we see as reality really is real?

Have you ever had the wonderful fortune of taking a trip to your local Department of Motor Vehicles? Well let me tell you, it’s a party! Make sure you bring something to entertain you and clear your schedule for the day because you’ll be there for awhile —regardless of what it is you’re there for.

Facts of Life

Concentration, laughter, sweat — extreme ping pong. Nearly everyday my brother and I play ping pong together. We crash down to the basement, pick up paddles and ping to decide who serves first. A great battle ensues, but I always win. Most of the time.

Temptation Killer Cat

posted by Carly Bergthold

As a die-hard cat person, one of my small joys is randomly coming across a cat or kitten. One day a beautiful Siamese-looking cat wandered into my yard. I caught my breath. Would it let me pet it? Did it live nearby so that it could visit more often? Most importantly, would my self-proclaimed guard cat be in sight range? In the past, if by chance another cat came within Ypsie’s boundaries, there would be a cat fight to raise the dead.

The Hills Are Alive! And They Took My Pride…

posted by Mike Blackaby

Several years ago I fell in love with the idea of snowboarding. I knew how to ski, but my teenage spirit yearned for new thrills (and boots that didn’t make me walk like a robot). I immediately jumped at an opportunity to take lessons with my brother and a couple of our best friends.

Here Again?

posted by Lisa Huddleston

Elijah had been to the mountain top. He had taken on the 450 prophets of Baal in a sacrificial duel and slaughtered them—literally! God had shown His power in a mighty way, and Elijah had been smack dab in the middle of it. He had to have been on the greatest adrenaline rush of his life. Yet, no sooner did he reach this mountain peak than he began to plummet down the other side into the valley.
