Sitting Pretty

posted by Ashley Davis

At a business meeting last week, I received a handout entitled “How to Sit at a Computer.” I snickered picturing my co-workers seeing it on my desk and thinking to themselves, “Well, we’ve sure got a sharp one here.” While I laughed at first, I put the information to use. The handout provided instruction on how to properly position yourself to work most comfortably and efficiently. So now, I’m sitting pretty with improved posture.

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about the posture of my heart. Am I positioned to hear from God and to be used for His glory? As I’ve pondered this question, I’ve come to two conclusions: Godly posture involves taking in God’s Word and turning from sin.

God guarantees change in our lives when we saturate ourselves in His Word. Isaiah 55:10-11 says, “For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout…so will My word be which goes forth from My mouth. It will not return to Me empty without accomplishing what I desire and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

Of late, I’ve been encouraged to increase my intake of God’s Word by looking for small pockets of time that can be filled with Scripture. What a productive use of time to spend spare minutes meditating on God’s Word! Like rain, it will cleanse and nourish our souls. To honor God’s Word is to position ourselves to hear from and be changed by God Almighty.

Godly posture also involves turning from sin. How can I go forward with God if I’m not willing to forsake my sin? How can I hear new things from Him if I am hardening my heart to the rebuke He’s already given? 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Sin hardens my heart to God; repentance softens it, enabling me to hear from and respond to God in fresh ways.

God, I want to position myself to be used for Your glory. May I discipline myself to spend time in Your Word. Show me creative ways to saturate myself in Scripture. Reveal sin to me. Give me a hatred for it that leads to genuine repentance. May I have a soft heart, ready to hear from and respond to You.

What disciplines/practices promote healthy spiritual posture in your life?
