Wishing and Waiting

posted by Jonathan Frank

Have you ever had the wonderful fortune of taking a trip to your local Department of Motor Vehicles? Well let me tell you, it’s a party! Make sure you bring something to entertain you and clear your schedule for the day because you’ll be there for awhile —regardless of what it is you’re there for. In my case, I was there last week just to renew my license. When I arrived there the lady gave me a number and told me to wait for my number to be called. So I waited … forever. Initially the lady was calling off numbers pretty fast, but then she disappeared—for an hour and a half! And you know if they had a television in the room or perhaps some reading material, I’d be good to go — but all that was available were free copies of the Tennessee Drivers Handbook. No thanks.

I was left hanging there, with no indication of when my number would be called. I just wanted to run up to the counter and say, “Hello! Do you see that I’m waiting here!” But something gave me the impression that none of them would have been too accommodating anyway.

If I’m being honest, sometimes I feel like that with God. So often, I feel as though I’m looking for direction, for answers and not receiving any type of response. But unlike my situation at the DMV, I can trust that God cares deeply about my situation, and although He may not come when I want Him, He is always right on time.

My friend “Erin” from Chick-fil-A, where I work, is waiting on God right now. Her husband was laid off from work, her bills are piling up, and she is bringing up a young child to boot. The other day she came to me in the back of the store with tears in her eyes and said she just didn’t know how she was going to make it. I really didn’t know what to say, but I didn’t have to because it was at that time that another co-worker came up and embraced her and whispered to her, “If God brought you to it, he’ll lead you through it.”

Cliché perhaps, but what a wonderful truth to know and to rest in! You and I serve a God whose timing is perfect, and will see us through any situation.

God’s word tells us in Psalm 55:22, “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” And when we cast our cares on the Lord, He never tells us to take a number and wait in line. He will always and forever meet us at our point of need and bring us through our trials. He hears our prayers and answers our cries, and we can know that no matter what — God loves us and will carry us to the other side!
